Firmware Updates: What are they and should I accept them?

One common question we get from customers are whether or not, in our opinion, they should accept updates to their printer's firmware (internal software). The short answer to this question is "no" because doing so rarely improves the printer's performance while incurring the risk that your aftermarket ink and toner chips stop working. In this article, we will attempt to briefly explain why this occurs and also explain how we minimize the impacts of this on our customer base.

Simply put, a printer's firmware is the program stored on the printer itself (not on your computer) that allows it to operate. The printer's firmware is responsible for not only controlling the print apparatus, but also the menus and other software features on the device. One subtle but important role the printer's firmware plays is to authenticate that genuine cartridges are installed (in printers where cartridges have chips, which is practically every printer nowadays).

Brother Monochrome Laser Printers: The best for refillers

When it comes to affordable black-and-white printing with minimal maintenance, nothing beats the convenience and price of a Brother laser.

We offer a full range of products for all Brother black-and-white laser printers currently on the market, including the ones that use the all-new TN-630/660 cartridge series.

We highly recommend Brother laser printers thanks to the chip-free cartridge design, and the fact that they are refillable without needing to pierce a hole. We have refill videos available for the full line of Brother laser models, including the new TN-630/660.

 New Inkjet Holemaking Tool

We now carry a 5/64" thumb drill for piercing holes in certain inkjet cartridges. This is a much simpler alternative compared to our previous holemaking tool, which melted a hole. At only $1, this inexpensive tool is ideal if you don't have or would prefer not to use an electric drill to make holes in your Canon, Dell, HP, or Lexmark inkjet cartridge.
