Disabling automatic Updates for HP OfficeJet and LaserJet Printers

To protect your ability to use non-original supplies in your HP OfficeJet or LaserJet printer, it is essential that you decline any printer firmware or software updates. If the HP software prompts you to update, please decline.

As of 2020, the following models are affected by firmware updates which may affect the acceptance of non-HP cartridges:

How to disable automatic firmware updates on HP OfficeJet printers: 

1. Swipe down on the printer's touchscreen to open the dashboard, and the touch the Setup icon.
2. Scroll down to and press Printer Maintenance.
3. Scroll down to and press Update the Printer.
4. Press Printer Update Options.
5. Press Do Not Check.
6. Finally, if a message comes up asking if you want to install an update, press No.

How to disable automatic firmware updates on HP LaserJet printers: 

1. On the printer's touchscreen, swipe right and press Setup. If your printer lacks a touchscreen, then scroll through the menu using the arrow buttons.
2. Scroll down to and press Service.
3. Scroll down to and press LaserJet Update.
4. Press Manage Updates.
5. Press Check Automatically and select Off, then return to the previous screen.
6. Press Prompt Before Install and select Always Prompt, then return to the previous screen.
7. Press Allow Updates and select No.
8. Press the Home button to return to the main menu.
9. If at any point, a message comes up asking if you want to install an update, be sure to decline.
