Original EPSON cartridges have chips which serve to communicate with the printer and to authenticate themselves as genuine. The InkOwl refillable cartridges have a chip slot for a working (not empty) EPSON chip.
It is, therefore, necessary to have a working (not empty) set of 9 EPSON 3800/3880 cartridges before making the switch to refillables.
Unfortunately, your printer's ink level monitor will stay as is from the moment you switch to InkOwl cartridges. However, the cartridges are transparent, so it is easy to see how much ink is left.
The reason the refillable cartridge chip adapters must disable the ink level monitor is that once the ink level on a cartridge reaches empty, its chip is permanently deactivated and the cartridge can no longer recognized. The refillable cartridge chip adapters prevent information about how many pages have been printed from reaching the EPSON chips which prevents them from deactivating, allowing them to be used indefinitely.
No chip resetter is required for the EPSON 3800 and 3880 printers.
