We have recently decided to revise our policy on using vacuum cleaners during toner refilling. Over the next few weeks, all the instructions sent out in all our kits are going to be progressively modified to remove all mention of household vacuum cleaners. The only vacuum cleaners suitable for refilling toner cartridges are those which are certified ESD-safe and equipped with HEPA filters. Most domestic and central vacuum cleaners do not meet these requirements and for this reason we don't believe them safe or effective for handling toner powder.
Nevertheless, for some models, it is essential that all leftover toner powder inside a cartridge be thoroughly emptied before refilling. This is to prevent what is known as toner contamination which results when two slighly different powder formulations mix inside a cartridge. Generally, by dumping the contents of a cartridge into a garbage can and then shaking and tapping the cartridge repeatedly, most old toner can be removed. Keep shaking and tapping until you notice no more powder escaping from the hole which implies that the cartridge has been completely emptied.
However, if "contamination" is not mentioned in your paper instructions, there is no need to empty the contents of the cartridge completely. Simply dumping the contents and tapping two or three times into a wastebasket will be fine.
You can rest assured that toner refilling is completely safe. Toner powder is not toxic. For more health, safety, and other tips to successful laser toner refilling, check out our Health and Safety page.
